Rules:

The colour rule for ogon as well as all other hikari KOI is that this KOI must be a bright, shiny, metallic color heavy with luster. The entire body of the KOI must be a deep color and the head and body should be identical in color. The fin color should match the body color and be deep and shiny. The scales should be evenly formed in straight lines, be heavy with luster, and have golden trimmings (fukurin)
It must posses overall elegance, quality, and an imposing appearance.

Hi Sas, the Ogon is about 64 cm. Not show quality but excellent breeding stock. Very often, the good breeding stock is not the best looking. The Yamabuki's are very popular and I am trying to have babies in stock all the time.

I am currently mainly an importer but do breed once a year with one female. I love the challenge although it is hard work.

The bloodline of the fish is the most important.
Then you should look at it's age. The ideal age is between four and five years. If the femalel is too young, the shell around the eggs are very thin and most of the eggs do not survive. If the female is too old, the shell is too thick and the sperms can not penetrate which leads to infertile eggs.
The bodyshape is quite important and the luster plays a big role. Obviously, the pattern of the fish is not important and minor deformaties or injuries does not affect the quality of the off-spring and are often used, because you can get a good quality koi with a bad pattern at a much lessor price. It would not be advisale to spawn with a show quality koi as you often loose your fish due to the amount of stress caused by spawning. This is also because spawning normally takes place during late spring, while the immune system of the Koi is not at it's best and bacteria and parasites, being very opportunistic, are very active at this stage and will attack a fish during and after spawning and take advantage of the stressed and tired fish.

There are also quite a few rules applicable to individual varieties, for instance your Kohaku should have as much as possible red to ensure a good balance between white and red, etc, but that aspect becomes quite technical. Maybe one of our expert breeders will reveal some secrets on this topic on this forum...
