Grass Carp Empty
PostSubject: Grass Carp   Grass Carp EmptyMon Feb 08, 2010 10:47 am

I received this enquiry and do not have any experience in Grass Carp. Could anyone please respond to this enquiry.

Hi All,

I am looking for advice based on the following:

I live at Great Brak River between George and Mossel Bay.

We have been declared a draught disaster area.

Some years back I introduced 5 grass carp, 65mm length, in order to keep the dam clean and green free.

This has been a huge success, the fish are now + 500mm and have never been fed except for the odd bread crust now and again for my own pleasure to view them.

The dam is aerated by a pump circulating the water as little as 5/10 hours a week.

The dam is now so low that the fish are stiring the bottom mud and I cannot circulate any more.

I have a plastic pool, +/- 1.2hl with non chlorinated clear water and a small circulating pump with filter.

My intentions is to transfer the grass carp this week and feed them with koi pellets in the hope that they will survive in this artificial enviroment.

Therefore I am asking for any knowlegdeable corfirmation/advice on my plan and the way forward.

I look forward and thank you for any input you may send me

Regards

Peter Vaughan

They will survive without any problems, but beware, they are very strong and wild. They will jump like popcorn whe placed in the new pond.

Have a large grass carp in my pond called "Shawdow". The grow extreemly large. They exceptional stromg swimmers, when I transfered mine, could not get him into the koi net, drained water and lifted him out. They do get "jumpy" when they are in a new environment, and will race around a while before settling down. They need will easily survive in the new environment:
- in the first week or so not to feed to much as they will not necessarily take the food.
- maybe start feeding with koi pellets now already to get them used to the food.

as jaco said you need to net the pond, the ywill try and jump.

Feding koi pellets now should help get them used to new food.

What i would do however is peas once they have been transfered. Bearing in mind that Grass Carp generally feed on weed and algae, thats why they are used for controlling watergrass etc infestations. I would feed them Green peas for a while and then start adding koi pellets to this and wean them onto the pellets.

ou could also just carry on with the peas and pellet mixture

i's neither of those stumble, the one that I had and have seen in various ponds is the yellow\orange one with the red eyes, rounded head and eyes to the front of the head. Also a very sleek body.

Used to love watching it eye alge, was like a terrier the way it would grip the alge and then rip it's head from side to side
