It's these large and small hooks that penetrate the skin and gills that cause the damage. Many scientists believe that flukes carry harmful bacteria and once the hooks have penetrated the skin and gills bacteria has a path for invasion. Remember that ulcers are often caused by damaged areas on the skin which allows bacterial invasion.
