Hi David,

Welcome to the long haul Laughing
The pond looks very formal, must compliment you on a job well done. Load some pics of the filter set up Arrow. Have you added fish yet? How long has the pond been running for?

Very nicely done. I like it if a pond is right at the entertainment area. (next to the braai) You see so many ponds away from where you spend most of your time outdoors.

Hi David

Ek sien jy is in Witpoortjie.

Ter voorbereiding van jou bouery stel ek voor jy steek kers op by plekke soos;
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] daar naby jou in Ontdekkers weg. Ek het gevind hulle het die goed maar weet nie mooi hoe die kloutjie by die oortjie kom as Koi betrokke is nie en
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] hier is 'n magdom van informasie maar bietjie moeilik om deur te sif.

Hi,

ek is tans besig om 'n dam by my kantoor in Chamdor te bou.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Ek het al my materiaal van Loolilocks ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ) gekry en ek het gevind dat hulle pryse redelik was en dat hulle die werking rondom Koi deeglik verstaan.

David,

My English is like your Afrikaans!

I am currently building a pond at my offices in Chamdor.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I purchased all my material from Loolilocks ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] )
Their prizes are acceptable, and they have a good knowledge regarding Koi keeping as well.

PostSubject: Re: MY FIRST POND   MY FIRST POND EmptyFri May 08, 2009 4:04 pm

Sorry David

Your location misled me. When I was a youngster Englishman (rooinekke) was hunted game in Witpoortjie.

In preparation of your building project you might find it useful to refer to the following:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Close to you in Ontdekkers Road. Got the goods but I am not convinced they know much about Koi (assuming you plan to keep Koi).

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ‘n lot of useful information but I sometimes find it difficult to find what I need.

Suggestion: post a sketch or plan of your future pond on the forum. The Gurus here will jump at the opportunity and enjoy helping you. You never know we might witness a lovely dogfight between some of them.

As you must have experienced with your lovely pond you shared with us, planning is 90% of the job. You will have to live with and maintain the result. Hereby I mean UV sizing, all piping etc.

Eventually after all the gurus had their say and the dog-fight-dust settled have a beer, apply your common sense and build the pond. After all it is your pond and your fish.

Hi
This look like a nice pond in progress.

Will you have a settlement chamber where the standpipes from the bottom drain lead to? You properly know but just in case - first prize is for each bottom drain to have its own stand pipe.

Please keep us posted with the progress. Love to see the filter setup.

After levelling the soil around the pond area i started with the bottom drains. I will encase the pipe's in concrete before throwing the slab.
any comments will be appreciated thank's.

MY FIRST POND Empty
PostSubject: Re: MY FIRST POND   MY FIRST POND EmptyWed Jun 17, 2009 3:26 pm

I would have done my slopes a bit different to enable me to place the two bottoms drains much further apart. Currently they are very close together, however, you have a fairly steep slope to the middle where both drains are situated, so you will hopefully not have problems.

The pond appears to be a bit shallow but will work quite well.

Keep us posted with further developments.

The pond will be 1.5 m at the shallow end's and 2.3 at the deep end. The
wall's are not finished yet. Ther is about a 20 degree slop on each side to the middle of the pond. It is not to late for changes what do you suggest about the slopes.

Hi David. If it is 2.3 and 1.5, the depth is perfect as far as I am concerned.

You already came this far, and the positioning of the drains in your case is not crucial if you maintain your 20 degree slope. With maybe an inlet/jet far below surface level on both sides(apart from surface inlets), I believe the two drains will be sufficient at the current positions. These inlets can push debris to the bottom drains apart from other advantages of mid-bottom inlets. One towards the left drain and one on the opposite side towards the right drain. It will also create a nice circulation and current for bodyshape.

Is this what you mean about the inlets? At the top of the slop just as it becomes vertical. Below the water. Were should the skimmer be?

I would do it something like this:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Swimmingpool aimflows on the mid bottom inlets towards the bottom. Nice thing about them is you can play around with the direction of the flow. They are very cheap at R 27.00 each.

The skimmer should be on the side where the wind normally blows towards.

Hi,

Should the water flow not be anticlockwise, as we are in the Southern hemisphere?

They say it extends the lifetime of the cement and it also seals of water entering the cement. Even when they build bridges in the sea they mix salt into cement. I mix cement and salt and paint that as last layer on the pond
