PostSubject: and these things are here to test us   filter - Adi's new pond - Page 2 EmptyWed Oct 28, 2009 3:38 pm

Water almost full, but had a leak over night, the inlet into the pond, and the connecting pipes, to the UV light was not sealed properly...so we leaked a lot of water, but that is fixed now. Hopefully tonight we can fill up to the edge, and get the pumps working.

Curious to see, bit skeptical if the one pump is maybe a bit strong, its pumping into the top pond alone, and then returns via the waterfall. Those pumps are 15000l per hour so......will see, might be too strong and would need to reduce a bit. This will be tested tonight!

And we still have a leak, the inlet is still leaking. So this morning this is being chisseled out, illed with RockGrip, then waterproof crack filler miixed with Corprox water proofing. Hopefully that will do the trick......
Could not resist and put in two small koi yesterday, with 12cm each they are the testers, and are happy! 2 small koi and 48000l water must be fun......fish for the weekend depend on getting the leak fixed....

PostSubject: and the struggle continues   filter - Adi's new pond - Page 2 EmptyMon Nov 02, 2009 9:27 am

A eventfull weekend, full of challenges.

Fixed leak at the inlet, fixed leak at the filter box where the bottom drains are coming in, but still loosing water somehwhere, overnight the level dropped by about 5-7cm.......

The second pump is way to strong for the waterfall, so I need to find a way to get the water back into the pond, but the bigger problem is that if both pumps are on, the last filter chamber empties way to quick, and gravity can not keep up........still thinking of to solve that one.

On teh bright side, got 22 small koi from the Dragon Koi from on Sunday, and they are happy. In that big pond one has to search for them, but they managed to get their food this morning.

Now if I could only find that leak........

It is always difficult to find a leak. Most builders pay little attention to the pipe work. They don’t realize it’s not a toilet or bathroom pipe going through a wall without water on the outside of the pipe. I had my share of that and tried my best to do the job in a proper way, but still had problems. At the end I had to use cement mixed with bonding liquid to seal it

think the problem is not so much the fixing, but finding the %^&* leak....

Will try and eliminate over lunch now, shut down the pump, close the filter chambers off and then fill them, that way can work via elimination where the problem is......

If the filter chamber drops if isolated, we get closer to the &*()^ leak.

PostSubject: and the winner is...   filter - Adi's new pond - Page 2 EmptyTue Nov 03, 2009 1:19 pm

Found the fault and leak. After isolation filters 2 and 3 and filling then they dropped water so quickly....was trying to be clever and put in some bottom drains of 50mm pipe in both, to clean out all the rubbish. Was thinking then hope these are going to stay sealed.

Well they were leaking and they were also nice to have, so last night they got filled up, and were sealed with a nice big load of Rock Grip (Wonderfull stuff) sets hard in 30 minutes waterproof and harder the concrete. This morning painted on some Coprox, this afternoon will do water again.

Good news is the pond did not drop so we are in business!

Still leaking in filter chamber 3.....but we are tracking it.
Here is a good old way of tracking a leak in a cloed environment.

Fill up, make sure there is no movement on the water, must be absolutely still.

Then take few drops of milk, and drop in the water, watch the milk dispurse and travel towards your leaking area. Time consuming, but u will find the leak, eventually.......

I have done it with potassium permanganate cristals all along the sides. You can see the purple line towards the leak. Only works if the leak is quite substantial.

Methylene Blue, Malachite Green or Acriflavine crystals will also work well, as they are actually blue, green and yellow dyes.

Yes those should work too.....and a bit of dis-infecting is happening too. Starting to go a little crazy......looks like the leaks are gone, and it was gravity that was taking the water through the pump, and back into the pond, and no leak, but thats being tested at the moment...lets hope for the best....
