PostSubject: When to buy Koi   Thu Aug 06, 2009 12:45 pm

Which time of year would the best to introduce Koi to your pond? In winter when the water is cooler, or summer with the higher immune system present amongst fish?

Would love to get rid of unwanted fish to make space for new Koi. Maybe Sanke, Kohaku, Goshiki, Chagoi, Parachina, Tancho and Showa. Any ideas of which fish should look great and be good pond fish?

In my opinion, the best time is from October to April.

September will be the worst time as most koi die during September, because the fish start to eat but the beneficial bacteria are not at full strenght yet.

May is also not a good time, as I believe that koi should settle in before winter. Stress levels are high and the immune system starts to drop, and the koi does not like the fluctuating temperatures.

The middle of winter is also not bad, because the activity of bacteria and parasites are low.

Marius, you should wait until you are absolutely sure that your health issues have been sorted out.

I am dragging some of my growing on ponds end of September when I will have my best Japanese fish available.

Hi Marius
IMO the passion for the one that talks to you will override the Logic as explained by Paul. All keepers need to be prepared with a good QT set-up for the moment when the heart overrides the logic. Good QT management will require temperatures above 22c in summer or a heater to achieve the same in winter. Having said this, a heater is required all year round to create temp fluctuations for proper KHV testing.

Hi Paul, are you going to invite SAKKS Western Cape to your pond drag? Would be a nice experience for the koi lovers to see the feeeeeeesh.

Jy maak my dag.... .... "In touch with our feminine side"......... Vir "reward" gaan ek onmiddelik vir my 'n noddy badge aanskaf Basketball Arrow lol! of 'n "feeeeeeeeeeesh" daar by Paul soek.

My dam was lank laas onder 17c

Sadly, sonder my nuwe dam is ek reeds totaal overstock, 6 Koi in modderdam.

Dalk so 1.2m breed by 5m lank en so .8 diep.

Marius

Konstruksie Q-Dam

Filter sisteem...............LG cyclops Sandfilter!!!!

Q-Dam in gebruik met net oor.
