I have an option on getting a Speck Porpoise 90/16, 0.75kw, 220v (2nd Hand) to run my almost completed 3000 liter pond. Would this pump be to big ? Anyone have an idea of what a fair price would be for this pump ? Apparently its 9 months old, comes from a disused swimming pool and is still under 24 month warrenty.

That pump is way to poweful for a 3000L pond. You can get these pumps new for R 999 at builder warehouse. That pump does 21 000L per hour and the power usage (750 watts) on it is roughly R300 a month.

You need to get a smaller pump. Somthing like a waterfall or boyu water pump that does 5000L per hour at 100 watts. It should cost in the region of R 600 to R 800 to buy it and the monthly cost should be something like R 50.

Where do you buy the Boyu from? It looks like it can take a 50mm union am I correct? And can you use it in the water like a sub and out of the water like a pool pump?

The pumps can take pipe sized of 40mm + depending on which one you buy. I have the 10 000L / h one on my 3000L quarintine pond and it uses 40mm pipe. The boyu pumps can be used as submersibles and outside the water but they are not self priming.

The pumps also go upto 48 000L / h. One thing to note is they do not have very high head levels. The 36 000L /h one for example only uses 450 watts....wish i new about them before installing my two 0.45kw porpoise pumps.

I bought my 10 000L / h pump through Robert Wagner at KoiNetwork for R 700, unfortuantly have no idea who the actual distributors are. The one i bought has a very low power consumption of only 110 watt.

I got a 12,000 L/hr 175w one, for my 5000L pond, and it take a 50mm pipe.

I bought it from De la Ray, about 1 years ago for R660.

I am selling the 8000 l/hour pump for R 550.00 (Aqua H2O) + R 30.00 postage.

I am using it on five of my ponds for the past 18 months and they are doing extremely well.

Thats also a very good pump and price Paul. Will be very difficult to beat that price. That same pump goes for around R 800 at Brights Hardware.

Thanx for the advise and suggestions Wayne...I had a feeling that the pump might be a little too powerful (lol). The challange I have is that due to circumstantaces and limited space, I am forced to go with an external pump. I also have to consider the fact that I cant use gravity feed and have to have a pump that will be able to pull water up from a bottom drain that will be situated about 1.5 meters below the pump platform. Self priming is also a requirement (or at least preferable). Also, thinking long term, I would like a pump that would, after passing through the filter, still be able to create some current in the pond when returning back through a T-piece. Any suggestions now?

Will either of those be able to push water through a 2 bag badu koi sand filter?

The Magic works well on a two bag. I don't know about the Pico. The cheapest option is the .45 Speck Porpoise. It will give you double the water flow and is cheaper, although the monthly running costs will be double.

The Magic 6 is a .25? Will that be enough for the 2 bag koi filter?
