Crude Fat, not less than 50 g/kg
Crude Fibre, not more than 40 g/kg
Calcium, not more than 30 g/kg

Ongelooflik, het die kos van 'n trok afgeval?

Hoe kry jy dit so goedkoop?

Hi All

The same food was on sale at the JHB Koi Show for R150.00 per 6kg bag this is only a special for this month. Our farm is one of the biggest users of Aqua Nutro in Gauteng and the food was also offerd to as at the show but at a bulk price, we bought all the stock of their PTA depot. We will use it on the farm in our nice warm water during the winter. But I can tell you this the same food is going up by 30% as from Saterday. The normal price if you buy on the farm is R150.00 for 6kg or R25.00 p/kg, The same as on the show. The new price will be R195.00 p/6kg.

But we (Gauten) have to pay more for the transport to get it up here

So what is the moral of the story?

At Orient Koi Farm Aqua Nutro is always on a special

It probably smell because at least it is fresh. I also have a 400 liter Aquarium with small koi and feed them only High Protein Aqua Nutro. I never get a bad smell. Maybe you should increase your filtration. I use an external cannister filter.

Herewith the specs for the High Protein: (38% protein)

Koi High Protein Formula
Younger small fish with a high specific growth rate, have a requirement for a diet with a higher level of balanced amino acids than older, larger fish. This is because they are depositing bundles of protein within their muscle blocks. AQUANUTRO's Hi-protein formula reflects these changing dietary needs and are formulated with a higher level of the ideal amino acid profile. Use AQUANUTRO's high protein formula until koi and goldfish are large enough to consume maintenance food pellets

Crude Protein, not less than 380 g/kg
Crude Fat, not less than 50 g/kg
Crude Fibre, not more than 39 g/kg
Calcium, not more than 30 g/kg
Phosphorous, not less than 7 g/kg

Ingredients
Wheat, Fish meal, Yellow maize, Canola, Soybeans, Lysine, Methionine, Alfalfa, Rooibos, Lime, Sodium chloride, Vitamins, Minerals, Emulsifier, Natural antioxidants, Immune stimulant, Prebiotics, Palatability enhancer, Colourants, Spirulina.

I am not continuing the discussion regarding this specific make of food as it is pointless. Each person believes in something different.

Lets rather discuss koi food in general and their nutritional value.

Some intresting info that i have found:
Koi foods are not as well regulated as other pet food. Registration of ornamental fish food with the Registrar of Farm Feeds is still optional and only a few of fish food manufacturers or distributors undertook this option of ensuring their customers that their food comply with local recommendations for fish food.

A lot of koi foods are being sold unlabeled, without any guarantee of being nutritionally complete. The label should show the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor of the pet food, with contact detail, might any enquiry about quality arise....but do they?

Some koi foods only have between 16 - 17% protein although they claim differently. A koi food with around 16% protein is less than the legal limit for dog food in this country but yet the there is no control ragarding packaging and labeling of koi food.

Some local foods have around 30% protein but absolutely no vitamin C for example. These foods are also deficient in the amino acid so it won't work.

South Africa has become a dumping yard for low quality koi foods due to the lack of control. How many red and green pellets have you seen under different names?

In a previous post i showed that a koi food by a very well known manufacturer claimed to cure KHV, we all know better but it is not illegal for manufacturers to say what ever they want on their packaging in South Africa, that is also true regarding the ingredients...so how do you know who you can trust?

You can package hamster food tomorrow and sell it as koi food and claim that the fish will glow in the dark while eating this koi food and there is nothing any one can do regarding it because there is no control on the labeling or on the contents.

I found a very intresting and easy to read article on the web regarding Koi Food \ Nutrition.

If the manufacturer is a member of either the Pet Food Institute of South Africa or the Animal feed manufacturers Association, you can lodge a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa.

They have a code of conduct and can empose a fine, order reimbursement or payment of damages or make various other rulings in the event of false advertising.

If the manufacturer is not, there is not much you can do.

If you buy unknown Chinese (no name green and red pellet) imports, you can do nothing.

Hi -

I stand to be corrected on this but as far as I know Aqua Nutro and Shogun are the only two regisered koi foods in South Arica.

But i dont believe it. I know of a hotel in the cape that use to use this brand on their Koi pond and stopped using it because of the smell...They had complaints from their customers.

Back when i had the problem I even emailed Aqua Nutro about this and received no reply. I assume that it has to do with the type of protein they use (Fish meal)

The smell seams to remain even after the food has been eaten..it is almost as if the water is going bad.

Eugen wrote:

I believe the smell is caused by the very high content of fish meal.

I found that when the High Protein pellets are very fresh, it does have a very strong fish meal scent.

A few years ago, Aqua Nutro distributed their product in those non airtight 25 kg bags, and my garage always had a strong smell of fish meal while it was fresh. Due to the non airtight bags, the smell soon disappeared.

Nowadays, they distribute it in the airtight plastic packaging, which keeps it fresh much longer, and the distinct smell of fish meal last so much longer.

To me, a strong smell is prove of the freshness and won't bother me.

I personally mix the High protein with Maintenance, and seldom get a bad smell from my outdoor ponds itself. From the package after opening yes. Maybe it is because I mix it with maintenance formula, and in that way the fish meal content is lower.

With an indoor pond or aquarium, I can imagine that it might be a problem, although I use it in an Aquarium as already said without major problems. However, I do have a very good filtration on my aquarium, and I do regular water changes.

I actually like the fact that they sink. It prevents the pellets from going into the skimmer. One should just throw it away from the bottom drains.

Hi,

The smell from koi pellets can be a result of a number of things.

Fish meal has jumped tremendously in price in the last 4 years. Therefore manufacturers are continually trying to find substitutes.

Not all koi foods use fish meal and not all of them use fish meal as the only source of protein. Some koi foods use a combination of protein sources to keep costs down. I remember corresponding with a koi farmer in Texas and he was absolutely amazed that I used fish meal in my food. They used soya s a protein source.

I agree with Paul - a good pellet should have a fish meal smell. It is definitely a sign of freshness. However, the smell should not be overwhelming or bad.

Fresh pellets should have some fishmeal smell. Poor quality pellets will not have much of a fish meal smell. Old pellets will lose that smell and really old pellets will have a smell that will knock you in the sinuses – almost a paint thinner smell. This is caused by the lipids (oils) going rancid. This smell can be with pellets right from the start should the manufacturer use old oil when making the food.

There are some other really smelly ingredients used in koi pellets. For example some pellets are manufactured using a local chicken meal. You have no idea how that smells. The imported chicken meal is acceptable – but the local one is revolting and you will surely empty the contents of your stomach should you inhale too deeply ...... the factory that makes my food will not have the local chicken meal on its property!

Another ingredient use is meal and bone meal also not nice ...

The two things in koi pellets that can give problems are the yeasts and the oils. The yeasts can be activated should the moisture level of the pellets rise much above 10%. The moulds produced can be very toxic to koi. Be careful when storing pellets. Make sure they are in a dry place.
The lipids or oils in koi pellets are essential but they can react with the oxygen in the atmosphere and become rancid. Also not good for koi. Therefore store koi pellets in closed containers. The rancidity will occur over time and a small open packet used in a week or so should not be a problem. It’s when you store open packets for months that the rancidity occurs.

Any fungus on pellets – a fur like layer - means the pellets have become damp – throw away immediately.

Regards,
Chris
