Saragoi / Kohaku / Kujaku spawning Empty
PostSubject: Saragoi / Kohaku / Kujaku spawning   Saragoi / Kohaku / Kujaku spawning EmptyMon May 26, 2008 9:59 am

During January 2008 I had a surprise late spawning in one of my ponds. The female was a ginrin Saragoi and the active males were Kohaku and Kujaku.

I only took out one plant filled with eggs to see what it delivers by way of experiment.

I got quite a few nice Ochiba's, and surprisingly a Ginrin doitsu/Mirror Platinum Ogon(only one) and a few Kohaku's. See the photos.

The bulk of them are silver/grey (probably from the Ginrin Saragoi mother) with metallic golden, green/yellow patterns (probably from the Kujaku(wagoi) father) on the silver/grey. It resembles Kujaku but some are almost metallic Ochiba(net effect). Some with dirty white heads and some with golden heads. What variety will this be and what is your opinion on quality?

Hi Paul

Very nice experiment! Quality very good A grade and Maybe one or two AA. There is definitely one Kikusui (metallic with white base colour and red pattern).

The Kujaku have the wrong base colour it should be white but it is grey so I would say (Wagoi) Metallic Hi Ochiba some thing similar to what Louis Kruger breeds in Bloemfontein. scratch

The Platinum Ogon is full of black spots I think the fish will go black/grey with time maybe it will turn out to be a Kikukiryu.

If I were you I would put them in a mud pond after culling and forget about them for a year or two. After this time we will be able to make a better assessment of the quality of the Ojyaigoi (Parents/ Brood Stock paring) is it a good combination or not.

If you grow them in a normal pond you will have to wait a bit longer.

Hi Collin, hope you are right with the AA bounce bounce

There are also a few junk and I will probably only keep about 30. One thing that I have learned is not to waste your time and money growing on low quality koi. They eat just as much, they often grow slower, they restrict the growth of better quality koi and you cull or give them away after a year.

That is why I currently only buy Japanese Koi to grow on and only play around with my own bred Koi for the fun and experience.

I believe, rather leave the breeding to the experts.
