Went to a nursery, but they did not have suitable bonsai trees.
Bought some out of desperation...and to find out which are suitable.
Found in another nursery two ficus benjamina look nice tapering and the stems are thick...I think this will be the first two I will try. One I will give away as present if I manage to do sort it out.
The pictures are not good ...sent the cook to take them and he did not take them well. Will get new ones and post agin.
Is ficus benjamina suitable?
Are this any good..?
What do I do now...I don't have a bonsai pot at the moment...maybe to find some plastic container and use it until I buy a bonsai pot...or I leave them in the packets?
Should I start with a trim/ pruning?
When does one start wiring them....need to find wire too.
If repotting them is in order what soil should I use?
Should I trim the roots?

This are the trees I found...suspect they are not good. Will have to go in the bush next or to Costas dam.

Here are better pictures of the ficus benjamina.
One has two stems starting from the bottom and the other is single stem.

Hey Neli
Maybe you should try and get a book of Bonsai, you can look online for books. With my little knowledge the ficus benjamina looks the best and think it will work. Go look in the bush, think you will be better off there. We often went tree hunting on Saturdays when I still lived in Hoedspruit, Limpopo province. Shocked

The trunk is 30 cm high...I was chopping it when it was in the ground to make a ball of it.
But I suspect I might have killed it.

My bougainvillea lost all its leaves. Thought it died...I see today it has new leaves....Now I dont know if I should remove some brunches or just let it grow. Will it concentrate more energy into the brunches that remain or it is better to just let it grow everywhere.
But I think some brunches died.

PostSubject: Re: First bonsai help!   First bonsai help! EmptySat Dec 08, 2012 10:49 am

After going around the bonsai for one week, I finally decided on a front though I am not 100% sure. Left the side Taner chose intact so I can change my mind later.
Pruned some of the branches that were too long, and tied some branches to the pot to bend them a bit. Later I will bend them more. Bougie is real hard to bend if the branches are hard. I managed to break two branches, luckily not too vital, and not hard to replace.
The reason why I settled on this side is because the leader branch (trunk) of the apex is pointing forward (hugging?)
Now the question I have is:
1 is the leader for the apex.
2 and 3 are pointing forward and up a bit. Is that poking in the face or is OK as a part of the apex.... the branches are near by but one looks like it is dead.
Branch 4 had one big branch, unbendable and thick, I chopped it off, also had one small branch pointing forward. I chopped it but left few shoots at its base, which I can redirect when they grow.
The branch at the bottom to the left of 4, is already shooting....so I will just remove the shoots when they come up.
So what do You think?
Any advise?
What mistakes did I make?

Started Anew bonsai. This one is going to be a very small one. Probably less than 20 cm.
I dont know what the name of this little conifer is, but I grew it from a cutting. It should be two years old.
I really enjoyed my self styling it. It took me a very long time.
So far what I did is to clean the roots, opened the branches, and wired two branches...he he he!
I have not decided on the shape yet. That is why I did not remove any of the large branches. Just shortened the side branches for ramification and to reduce the foliage since I reduced the roots..
Does anyone know what is the name of this plant and if it is suitable for bonsai.
Is it suitable for bonsai?

This is how it looked
First bonsai help! Dsc01424
And this is how I vandalised it. Will work on it later again when I have decided on the style.

Any advise will be appreciated.

Now you need to make your own from scratch. It is so much fun.
I went to a nursery today and bought two potentials. One was R700 not a bonsai Just a tree but imported from SA, the other one R500 one and was called acacia bonsai, what ever they mean by that.
Does any one know what are this?
