PostSubject: Help...Bacterial Infection   Help...Bacterial Infection EmptySat May 14, 2011 6:23 pm

I think I have a fish with a bacterial infection.
I have brushed off the infected area with Hydrogen Peroxide 20 , dried the area, put Friar's balsam on and dried it with a hairdryer.
I also increased the salt in the pond.

What more can I do?

Hi Marius, the fact that one fish has such a severe infection, indicates that there might be more fish that is infected. Are there any other fish infected? If so, you should immediately proceed with a series of Potassium Permanganate treatments of the whole pond as prescribed under Medicine.

As far as this fish are concerned, even if you stop the infection, the scars will be there for ever because it is a large fish, in which case the scales don't grow back easily. I would consider culling the fish. It might just infect some of your other fish and why run the risk.

We are going into winter and with our low winter temperatures, it is very difficult to treat such a serious infection unless you have heating facilities, and that is going to cost you a lot of money.

Baytril might heal the infection, but might not be the right anti-biotic.

PostSubject: Re: Help...Bacterial Infection   Help...Bacterial Infection EmptySun May 15, 2011 11:28 am

Marius,

Sterkte

So far it looks like it is only the one fish. I think the right thing to do is to cull the fish.

How do I treat my pond to prevent other fish also getting the infection?

I have pushed up the salt to 3

Help...Bacterial Infection Empty
PostSubject: Re: Help...Bacterial Infection   Help...Bacterial Infection EmptyThu May 19, 2011 7:29 pm

In the beginning when i started with koi i want to cure each and every fish that got sick and that cost me lots of money and time and i lost 80% of the collection in any case .....since then i have developed a new way of thinking, i look at the kois injury and weigh up the kois value and how much it would cost me to heal it....knowing that i will never be the same as it was.

Last year, i culled 4 or 5 kois just cause it was not worth the hassle and money. Its probably a hard way of doing it but if a koi of R150 is going to get a bacterial infection am i really going to sped R300 on electricity and R200 on medication to fix it so that it can have heal and still have a scar?

I would put this koi down and buy a new one and not risk the health of the rest of my collection, its never going to recover 100% in any case.
