Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and also new to koi, I have a tropical tank for the past 5 years with great success but a bit bored now, in a couple of weeks my koi pond will be ready for its first koi. I like to do a lot of research before jumping in to anything, where to buy, what to buy etc.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, To buy small kio, you don't really know what your buying due to colour changes, appearances and all of this depends on water condition and diet.

Knowing about keeping tropical fish will probably help a little, but am sure that this is going to be a whole new learning curve.

Hi there and welcome to the forum and a very exciting hobby. You will never go back to tropical fish tanks.

Your experience will assist you with water parameters, but there are so many things to learn about Koi and my advice is to read through the hundreds of threads on this forum to see what mistakes people made.

My advice to you is, buy only top quality koi right from the start, and do not overstock. Take it slow and gradually build up your collection.

Rather have four top quality koi than 10 mutts. Do not buy from any pet shop, and only buy from a reputable koi dealer.

What is the size of your pond and filtration and do you have photos?
