Hi guys I have bought this new koi keepers unleashed and boy is it awsome there is a question in the one section were they ask Is this koi classified as tategoi? what does that mean.

Tategoi as I understand it is a Koi that has a lot of potential and still has a lot of development to still to come.

Shawn... the term Tategoi is is often used by dealers wanting to stress the future potential of the koi they want to sell to you

IMO you have to be extremely knowledgeable of the breed to identify a tategoi in the real sense of the word.

Neville I am a very organized person (who cant spel) and I have made my own sort of spred sheet in windows with all the info of every koi I ever had and also its progress and this program is everuthing and more it is awsome out of this world and wearth every cent and for 200 od rand im really happy.

The only time to forgive the miss-use of the word “Tategoi”, is if a poor hobbyist have paid too much for a particular Koi and he/she has a burning desire to justify the purchase, or to boast about a specific Koi. If one can tolerate the exaggeration by a fisherman, one can also keep the peace and tolerate a hobbyist calling his Koi, “Tategoi”!

Sorry Neville, I must disagree! I saw photos of Shawn in his wet-suit at Bobby's pond and he seriously lacks the required sigar-shaped body with a nice girth like a true tategoi.

His potential as a good koi keeper with good posts on the forum, yes!

Thank you for your kind words

The standard to classify a Koi as Tategoi is 'Koi with potential for further development to become very good, is not yet finished developing.'

This is usually, as said earlier, deemed by the breeder (or dealer) BUT you can classify any koi in your collection as tategoi as far as Koi Keeper Unleashed is concerned. If you have a koi that you believe has potential there is nothing stopping you from classifying it as tategoi within your copy of the software. Once it has reached its potential (finished its development) then remove the Tategoi classification from the koi. You can add items in the notes for progress that state when you believe the koi has finished development and is no longer Tategoi.

More to this is Tateshita which is 'No longer tategoi' basically a koi that has finished it's development i.e. will not improve any further.
