| Good day all I Posted this same sanke on another koi site and there was alot to be said but this is what one of the more senior members had to say. There's something here that I would like to try to clear up. There seems to be a misconception about the difference between "hoshi" and white around the scales. These are actually two different things. "hoshi" as it is referred to is caused by very good growth during the summer season. The scales grow at a certain rate that "stretches" the beni if it has good "Nerikome" which is good thick deep rooted beni. It will be displayed as deeper color in the middle of all the scales with the outer areas of the scale being lighter in color, but none the less, orange/red, NOT WHITE.This hasn't got much to do with the hue of the beni. Dark, purple based beni is a harder, less resilient type of beni that usually resides in the surface or epidermis of the skin. If a fish with this type of beni is grown too quickly, it will break apart and usually disappears almost completely.
This Sanke has grown very nicely over it's first year or so, displays very nice Hoshi, has decent body conformation albeit a slightly smaller tail tube than I'd like to see, but that can be corrected with good future growth. The beni plates are evenly placed and of homogenous coloration from front to back.
Now, on to the sumi. The sumi on this fish is still in the adolescent stages of development. But what I see is very promising. First, the location of every single sumi plate is placed quite strategically over the entire body and complements the beni plates. It is also all rooted on the shiroji. Those two points are what is considered, from what I've been taught, to be Tsubo Zumi.
I truly hope you have the knowledge and ability to care for this fish for the foreseeable future (next 8-10 years). You have, what I believe to be, a champion potential fish on your hands. Whether it ever achieves that is now totally up to you and the genetics within HER!
Good Luck and PLEASE, keep us posted on her development over the next 1-3 years.
Mike

| Hi Shawn That is a very constructive comment, this guy seems to know what he is talking about. As he say's the ball is now in your court, look after it well. Well done. |

| Hi,
I am a bit confused, what are “hoshi” and “nerikome”?
Tsubo sumi = Black that appears on the white skin ( as opposed to Kasane sumi, which appears on the red markings) |

| Pieterj, It also had me baffled and I had to search for the meanings I am not sure how the "hoshi" fits into the sentence used, but what I could find out was that it means "opening or window in pattern" Nerikome, also spelled "nerikomi" comes from a term used in pottery and means well-mixed. In koi, eveness/uniformity of colour. Now I have learned something |

| Thanks Pieter, Furthermore, how does this apply to the Sanke in question? |

| Shawn, I also like the Sanke and think you ought to look after it well to let it develop its full potential. Have the guts to make your dream come true None of us were privy to the full discussion on the other forum, so forgive me if I make some assumptions that are not true. What I gather from your post was that there were some comments that may have been harsh on the fact that that the edges of the scales are a slightly different colour than the centre of the scales? Almost like fukurin on shiroji? The hi plate in a mature Koi is supposed to be such that the individual scales are almost indistinguishable from each other. I think the post that you quoted was actually in defence of this difference that is evident on your Sanke? There is however merit in the comments from that senior member. What he is trying to tell the other forum members is that it is normal for a fast growing koi to have lighter edges to the scales as long as the centre shows good deep hi and all the centres of the scales shows the same even hi throughout. I just think he did not articulate himself well and caused a little confusion amongst us because we did not follow the whole thread. Maybe you can give us more info or the URL to that post? |

| Well it was me that started the hole debate about the White or lighter edge of the scales I knew my koi had it but when I read the comments of another Showa post who had the same lighter edges on it's scales I posted my sanke saying I was happy it was all a good sign well here is the link hope I did it right.
