| Last week we had no water for a few day's in Krugersdorp, and today the power went. The excuse was this morning we had 25mm of rain. Interesting though my power only went off around midday.? Well I have a small genset so find a garage with petrol and get going. Well my gennie cannot pull both pump's so we decided we will change over every 2 hrs or so. Surprise at the first changeover it wont pull the other pump, and it is also a ,75 Quality. in a very similar setup. You better believe that some serious tests as to power consumption will happen tomorrow, or when we have power again. Rumors have it that it could be 4 days. Promise you I am boiling under the collar. All of a sudden I feel very far from everything. |

| H All
Yes t s gong to be 4 day's well that s what they say now. 12 Hrs on and 12 Hrs of. Apparently we had 2 transformers and the one was hit by the first bit of lightning we see this year. So now half of town gets power from 10 in the evening and the other half from 10 in the morning. Oh shit we are living in Africa aren't we.

| Hi Bobby
Ja jy is reg jong ek is so de mo#@r in vanaand man, waar is die standby goed, en hoekom het die weerlig die ding raakgeslaan. Dis mos sommer kaf man, daar is weer geen onderhoud gedoen man.
Dit het in die ou tyd gebeur maar dan is die krag vir n half uur of so af man, en dit in storm weer. Hierdie onvermoe gaan ons nog laat seerkry man.

| Neville, ek ken daardie gevoel. Gelukkig het ek daar aangkom so 'n maand voordat alles herstel was.
My kankerstokkies het 3 jaar gelede so R13 gekos.

| Hello Would it not be better to run a few large air pumps instead of the filter while the power is off? not forgetting to put some air stones in your filters as well to keep them alive?. Shane |

| Hi Neville, 1) Stop all feeding immediately - very important. 2) If you have a generator and can run one small pump then do so. A small pump with a slow turnover rate is far better than nothing. (And is far better than air stones). If necessary only run the pump at night. During the day some oxygen will be produced from the algae but you need to keep a eye on things (see # 6.) 3) Stopping feeding will go a long way towards controlling water quality and reducing the fishes oxygen consumption. 4) IF you do not have a generator. Drain all filters that have water sitting in them. Leave these filters open and occasionally throw a bucket of pond water over the media. If you have a bakkie shower that's fine - leave alone and perhaps throw a bucket of water over the top layer every now and again (the exercise will do you the world of good - he said pulling his stomach in .... ) 5) If you have the equipment then add a few air stones to the BOTTOM of the pond. If you do not have a strong enough pump then use your compressors - even if it’s for an hour or two at a time. 6) Everything now depends on your stocking densities - if you are heavily stocked - you have a potential problem and you need to keep an eye on things. Any sign of piping or gulping on the surface turn the compressor on - you could use a swimming pool aluminium thingy (sorry pole) to direct air to the bottom of your pond when you have to - and get the water up to the atmosphere. 7) If you have pressurised filters - sand filters or bubble bead filters make sure you air bump AND back wash thoroughly before you start up again. Be grateful the lightning did not strike you or your house. Chris |

| Neville, I have just received notification that we will be off on Sunday from 07h00 to 18h00 for maintenance. Well over and above that my generator at home will have to manage the Koi, I have to bake a 1000 bread and manage coolers, deep freezers, perishables and ice cream at my store for the day. A big potential lost and no compensation, part of life's challenges. My bigger concern is that this does not forecast a dark Sunday for the Weee Peee : and a sunny day for the men in orange. I had a similar omen last Saturday and it ended well for the WP This could also be that the Wee Pee will party until the lights goes out. |

| Chris this is good idea, Called, manual filtration. Should get our dam Town Clerc or Mayor to come do it. After all we live in Africa.

Thanks for all the good advise, I did stop feeding yesterday and have added the air stones and all the nice things. Will monitor closely.
I suppose a state of the art gen set is the real solution, but what about all the money we gave the authorities to provide us with these services, suppose gone into bonuses.
The goose is dying.

| Hi Neville - a little off the subject - about the golden goose you mentioned .... 95,000 jobs were lost last month - in the USA. There are power outages in California. Las Vegas is dying as it will run out of water in 4 years. When we were in Greece last month we found out some interesting things - they had no money so the Germans built the highway between the airport and Athens - the Germans get the revene for 20 years. The Chinese built the air port - and yes they get the revenue for 25 years. The government played silly buggers with the pension funds on the stock exchange and lost huge amounts of money - which is why they have had to REDUCE pension payments to everyone who gets them. 20% of people in the USA live on the poverty line. And a great bit of usless information - really off the subject - in Britian the guy who is in control of the electrical supply to London (one of the worlds great cities) sits and watches TV in the evenings - why (I hope you ask) - well when the soapies are finished 1,500,000 kettles get turned on at the same time. So he has to activate a sub-station to start generating electricity if his normal supply falls below a certain level. No about the outage in your area ...... ? Chris |
