If one buys a 0.45kw pump for example, will the power consumption of that pump be 0.45kw or will it be higher?

The calculations below is the power consumption of my pond worked with math...but in reallity it seems to be very diffirent,

0.450kw Pump (http://www.speck-pumps.co.za/code/products/porpoise.htm)
0.250kw Pump
0.030kw UV light
0.030kw UV light
0.120kw Air pump
= 0.88Kw / hr

0.88kw x 24hr x 30 days x 0.7997c
Pond = R 506.68992

I measured the amp usage of the 0.450kw pump the other day and it was using 5amps. (I have two 0.45kw pumps, one is a spare and both report the same usage)

Now again using math...
5 amp * 240 volts = 1200watts....how is that possible if the pump specs say its a 450watt pump when in reality i have a 1.2kw pump?

Wayne net gou n vraag hoe het jy die lesing gekry met start up of terwyl die pomp geloop het want ek het ok n .45kw speck motor en sy lesing is 1.95 amp en my spaning by my huis gelees is 230v

Hi Frans, 'n electrtion het dit vir my geneem terwyl die pompe gehardloop het. Elke pomp hardloop op sy eie lyn van die DB bord af. Ek het wel nie gaan kyk wat my huis se incoming volts is nie.

Die speck pomp se tegniese data se die 0.45kw pomp gebruik 3.1amps teen 230V. As mens dit klaar uitwerk 230volt x 3.1 = 713watt (0.7kw)

Ek leer nou 'n waardevolle les hier oor elektriesietyd en pompe.

Met die nuwe inligting lyk my krag so:

Pond:
0.700kw Pump (0.450kw)
0.450kw Pump (0.250kw)
0.030kw UV light
0.030kw UV light
0.120kw Air pump

1.33Kw / hr
1kw/h = 0.7997c

1.33kw x 24hr x 30 days x 0.7997c
= R 765.79272

R 765.79 is nog steeds nie sleg nie, my krag is nou oor die R2 300 per maand so ek is op soek na die lek. Wink

Die elektrition het so metertjie wat hy net om die draad gehou het en die ding se dan vir hom die leseing. Dit koppel nie aan die drade nie of niks, hy hou dit net so in die lug rondom die draad.

Wayne jy is reg met jou calc's, maar dit is input (consumption at max delivery).

Daar is n sekere boete wat ons betaal vir die verliese om die motor te laat draai sonder dat hy iets doen.

So dit rym dat jou output net ,45 sal wees, vir n input van ,75

Maar die check wat julle gedoen het is n bitjie van n kopseer ek dink n mens moet dit bietjie navors. Dit is soos om die water by die inlaat van jou dam te meet, dit is wat werklik gebeur en nie wat op die grafieke verskyn nie.

Daar is n fout iewers jou actual consumpsion is te hoog vir daardie motor, tensy hy al gerewind is en dit nie korrek gedoen is of miskien verkeerde plaatjie op het.
Kan baie dinge wees. Bearings wat te veel wrywing veroorsaak?

Dit is maar my opinie, ek kan niks bewys nie ek is nie n ekspert.

Miskien het dit tyd geword dat n mens bietjie na jou totale verbruik per ietem kyk en sien wat kos dit jou regtig, jy kry so lekker "tool" hulle noem dit n tong tester en dit sal jou mooi se.

Ek sien n goeie elektrisien pel van my moontlik die naweek en sal met hom hieroor ook gesels.

So jy sit met n situasie van "False Economy".

Hierdie was van die goed wat ek graag wou bespreek toe my thread daaroor gesink is.

Die tester word n digital clamp meter genoem. Te koop by Midas vir onder R300.00.Nogal interesant om te sien wat vreet die meeste krag in n huishouding.

daars jou proebleem,gaan as volg te werke neem n multi meter ontkopel die rooi draad van jou motor vat dan die multi meter en plaas die rooi draad van die meter in die 10 a sokket die swart draad van die meter los jy in die com sokket draai die meter tot op die 10a lesing en selct ac vat dan die rooi draad van die meter en plaas dit op die plek waar die motor ontkopel is die rooi draad van die motor sit jy dan op die swart draad van die meter nou is die kopeling in series skakel jou motor aan en dan kry jy die lesing

Ok, het nou een van die fancy clamp multi meters gaan koop by Midas vir R 159 ...alles sal nou getoets word in die huis tot ek uitvind waar die lek is. frans ek sal nou nou 'n foto post van die meter dat jy my kan vertel hoe ek moet maak.

Mens hou nooit op met leer in die hobby nie, van dam bou, vis genetics, kamera werk, tot elictrical werk....

Ok this is a simular looking meter as to the one i got.



And here are some instructions that i got.

1.Turn the multimeter on and set it to read AC current.

2.Use the clamp meter to measure the current in a household two-wire lamp cord. Turn the lamp on. Open the clamp and close it so it surrounds the lamp's power cord. Do not pinch the wire inside clamp parts that meet together. Though the lamp is on, you should be reading nearly a zero current. Since the clamp is around two conductors carrying current in opposite directions, the magnetic fields cancel out.

3.Prepare an extension cord by carefully separating the two parallel conductors. Separate them for a length of about one foot. Check that the copper wire is still insulated and not exposed.

4.Plug the extension cord into a wall outlet and connect the lamp into the extension. Turn the lamp on and close the meter's clamp around one of the extension's conductors. You should now be getting a clear current reading of between .5 and 1.5 amps. Since the clamp surrounds only one conductor, you can get an accurate reading. Whenever you're using the clamp, it must surround only a single conductor; multiple conductors will distort the reading. When you're done testing the meter, unplug the extension cord from the lamp and discard the cord.
