PostSubject: "Artificial" Spawning   Sun Aug 15, 2010 11:01 pm

Hi all

I just want to find out what the correct procedure would be. One of my female kohaku's is completely filled with eggs. I bowled her today and gently rubbed along her abdomen. When I did this she started to expell eggs.

I want to try expelling the eggs in a bowl myself and then squeeze the male's sperm over the eggs. I will then put the fertilized eggs into the spawning tank.

What should I bear in mind when doing this? Should I only use one males sperm or can I use more than one? I've only done natural spawning in the past and want to experiment a bit.

You need Collin Nel or Lee-Ann Nels advice here.

Ive done the hand stripping this year for the first time with success and yes the mommy is still alive;) but i tossed the eggs afterwards. So no idea on what to do with the male...Viagra maybe?

Chris, your best source of information on the subject is http://www.koiandponds.com/dry-fertilization.htm

I believe it is way to early to do it now, unless you have indoor or heated facilities. One cold front after they have hatched, and you loose all your fry.

Live food is also not readily available at the moment. I would wait at least until end of September.

You can now almost start to prepare breeding of some Daphnia or Brine Shrimp so that you have a life food source by the time the fry hatch.

Thanks

I was going to wait until late September... Where can I get hold of Daphnia or Brine shrimp? I've tried to get but people look at me funny when I ask around.

Order the Brine Shrimp eggs online at www.brineshrimp.co.za

Daphnia: Fill a portapool, add some cow or chicken manure, potatoes, salad leaves, a bit of aeration and wait.

Opsie 1 klink vir my beter....
