Hi

I would appreciate some feedback on the below kohaku please.
I was looking for one with more white and the quality of the pattern and colour struck me.

at first glance it looks empty and therefore not crazy about it, but as I carry on looking at it it grows on me. Would have been nice to have so Hi in the mid section, also has a nice big mouth and white head which looks like it could grow to a decent size.

Thing I like about it is it's a very different 2 step you wont always see, the dorsal fin is nice and clean.....the pecs aswell and I like the distance from the nose to the Hi and the odome which seems to balance the fish a little better. Hi also doesn't touch the eyes......in my amateurish eye I kinda like it.......it's a very different kinda 2 step which is nice to me.

The hi looks very strong, is of the same intensity and should last, but it has too little red and will not show "power" in future. The ideal at this age is a coverage of 70-80%.

Sharp kiwa but little sashi.

It appears to have red in the dorsal fin which can be a demerit.

The pink on the white is a bad sign and the white is not pure white. A nice painting on a poor backgound is not a nice painting.

The nose to me is too long/pointy which throws off the confirmation.

The hi should ideally extend up to the nose holes and yours does not extend far enough. As Cliff said, a good odome.

It appears to have a deformity just above the leading ray of the left pectoral fin. (almost a bump)

At this age a cute fish, but in my opinion not a great future. I hope I am wrong.

Didn't think of it as a show fish but future breeding fish. I have a female from Marudoh Koi Farm that's got a full pattern & I'm looking for a male with less white on to breed with.

Chris,

I am not a breeder, but to me body shape when breeding should be essential.
This Koi has a bad body shape!

Hi Chris,

I cannot agree more with both Pieter and Paul, Their knowledge come through strongly.

The Hi coverage will be a problem when this fish gets bigger, it will be a white fish with red. Instead of a red with white. I suppose one could compromise some red but then the white has to be striking.

As for, (I see Dr. P. J. de Villiers phd fish) he, is also correct here that the body shape is not very good, although not all that important if you don't want to show. But again for me on kohaku or any other fish the white must be WHITE! then one tend to look past other defects. A bit of hi in the centre would make this fish much better.

How old it this koi ?

I agree with Pieter that bodyshape is part of the genetics that are carried over from parent to fry.
Everything plays a role if you want good offspring.

All points taken into account, thanks.... Remember that I said FUTURE breeder. Fish is still under a year old and is 20cm. Was in selling ponds so hasn't been fed a lot.

Just another question regarding this issue with the white:
This one just came out of the bag with other fish after a long drive... Don't fish tend to stress during this transportation which may cause the white to appear pinkish until the fish settles down again? I had that happen before with an Utsuri and the white on that fish now is phenominal. With my luck someone will now tell me that only bad genetics can cause this.
