Koi "Parking" Empty
PostSubject: Koi "Parking"   Koi "Parking" EmptyFri May 21, 2010 6:07 pm

Hi, need some advice please...pond looks like a shopping centre car park!

I have noticed over the last few days that the fish seem to park themselves on the bottom of the pond and stay there for awhile and then after a few minutes, they move around. It's almost like they are having a snooze.

Not all of them are doing it, just 2 of the larger ones and 2 of the smaller ones. The babies ( from the SAKKS show ) are all full of life!

Could this be a parasite infection about to start? Could it be the drop in temperature?

Should I be worried?

Hi Ed, they could do this in colder weather, if the fins are clamped against the body I would be getting concerned.

Hi Ed,

My fish are doing the same.

My pond is at 16C in the afternoons. I consider this normal behaviour as temperatures drop going into winter and the koi are adjusting and slowing down.

What is your pond morning temp and the late afternoon temp.

Chris

Thanks for the replies.

I don't have a temp guage so can't measure, but the water is alot cooler now, and being a small pond, the variation would also be greater during the day.

There is some clamping of the fins, but only when they park and they also tend to park in sunnier spots in the pond.

I've also noticed that their eating is slowing down, and I find that I am feeding half of what they would normally get down within 10 minutes.

I'll keep an eye on the clamping, but what woudl this mean?

Thanks again

Clamping is normal in winter months.

Hi Ed
They are resting man. I just hope your floor is clean because all the gogo's also live down there. Suggest u do a pond vacuum if not.

My water is also sitting at 16C but my fish are still swimming around and eating well. Just goes to show that every pond is different.
Ed you can get a floating thermometer from the pool guys they are not expensive. Nice to have and the fish like to push them around.

You must just keep a close watch anyway.
