Two things comes to mind. Gill rot or KHV.

The first step would be to inspect the gills. See if they look healthy. Are there any other signs, for instance lethargic etc?

Can also be costia or a bacterial infection.

If the gills look fine, do a scrape to check for costia.

There is also a condition known as pig eye where the bone around the eye grows and starts to cover the eye. That can also cause they to look sunken.

ooh, ooh. Adeel how many fish do you have and please until this is resolved dont move any in or out of your pond. This does not sound good to me where are you situated? Are you a SAKKS member? I think you should call them if you are. If you tell me where you are I will tell you where to have a KHV test done.

NEVILLE, WAYNE AND PAUL: BRIEF BACKGROUND. MY KOI POND WAS COMPLETED 1ST FEB 2010. RAN THE FILTERS FOR A WEEK AND EMPTIED ALL THE WATER 3 TIMES AND THN RAN FOR 2 WEEKS WITH NO FISH.I THEN BOUGHT 7 FISH AMONG THEM WAS THIS PARTICULAR BUTTRFLY KOI. A MONTH AFTER I THEN BOUGHT 6 SMALL ONES ABOUT 15 CM. ALL AT THAT MOMENT WAS STILL FINE. AFTER A WEEK I BOUGHT ANOTHER FEW AND UP TILL A WEEK AGO , MY BUTTERFLY KOI GAVE ME SIGNS OF BEING SLOWER. I THOUGH ITS THE SEASON CHANGE. 3 DAYS AGO I NOTICED THE EYES WERE SUNKEN IN AND SAW THE RED VENTRAL VINS WITH A FEW SCALES LIFTED. I THEN REMOVED IT . I NOTICED SMALL RED SPOTS AND CLEANED WITH PP. I cannot comment on anything else but this ... that fish looks particularly thin to me .. almost as if it starved.

Looks like gill rot.

Symptoms of gill rot:

Sunken eyes
Discoloring (see the grey spot)
Section of the gills missing
Filaments appear to stuck together
Fish lethargic

Gill rot is caused by either KHV or Flavobacterium columnare or in short Columnaris disease which is a bacterial disease.

It can also be caused primarily by parasites that goes over into this type of secondary bacterial disease. Is it you you phoned me about fish lice and ordered Dimilin from me?

If any of the other fish are affected, you should take a swob asap and send it to MDS in Durban. See the procedure and application form under the KHV heading of this forum.

Please keep us posted.
