I have taken advice from the experts and started to add the salt to the pond today and will finish the process tomorrow to .6%. After a period of 6-7 days I will start to remove the salt with a every water change .

| Most sources say that you should not use salt at levels above 0.5% as an indefinate treatment.
5kg/1000 liters is the max for me unless I do a salt bath.
I still do not believe that you have a major problem, and very high salt levels might just stress your fish unnecessary, especially because they are not used to salt.
I would rather add 0.4% in this case together with a mild anti-septic/anti bacterial treatment like Acriflavine, but only if the symptoms does not clear by itself within a few days. |

I might not know much, but I know I wouldn't put that much salt in my pond. I agree with what Paul says. Makes a lot of sense and is safer I think.

0.5% was the highest that one of my koi medical books specify, and then only for short periods.

I don't know much about this salt debate, but I have used .8 for extended periods of time to save my Kindai and friend in a QT tank and after an 18mth battle she is still going strong. Well let me play it safe and first take it to .5 and evaluate.

HI Ernst, My pond is currenly at 4.3 and I can on day one see a difference, remember mine was from .04 so I will decide in the morning should I continue by adding more! I hope its not a question of me seeing what I want to see, but the few spots on your EX SHOWA seems to be gone!

That's good news! I took mine to around 0.55% and all were fine. Glad it's working out. Keep us 'salt lovers' posted. you should also see some improvents in other areas that been giving you problems with your NPS. Salt is also great for Nitrite while your filters are maturing.

Hi Adi, Feeding effected but swimming pattern not effected, not lethargic, not hanging around and no flashing. I added another bag this morning and it is now at .5%.. Added some clay and they seem to prefer feeding of the walls. Also had a weather change with overnight rain and a bit today, water temp 20C

. I wish, not all, maybe it's a question of more time in the salt. I should really assess after 7 - 10 days. At this stage I feel this should be categorized in two parts. "The perceived Cold" New development On head and body " flakes" Body 100% gone Head 90% gone. Excess mucus on the head especially the Kohaku's has been present for some time now. Not sure if the salt is doing the trick 60% gone, time will tell. Ernst has mentioned the possibility of a fungus but I see no fungi on Web that match the condition, also Costia was mentioned, I again do not see this in koi behavior.. Well I am open to suggestions as I am not known for my patience, it looks like I will just have to play the wait and see game.
