I put water Irises in my filter ponds without potting them, no soil or gravel at all. A lot of them floats on top, making it easy to clean the bottoms. Even those that drift on the water in a horizintal position soon gets new leaves growing vertically.

It is the yellow flag water iris and have a nice yellow flower (Iris pseudacorus)

It also comes in mauve, blue or white but they are more difficlut to get hold of.

You can fetch some from me for free. (Yellow) George is around the corner Very Happy

The complete encyclopedia of herbs. Page 158 and 159.

Quote :
The rhizome of the yellow flag tastes extremely bitter and contains toxic substances.

Quote :
This was once used as a purgative to induce vomitting.

Quote :
The flowers provde a yellow dyestuff for colouring tectiles including wool.

Iris germanica is the blue/purple one. (Orris)

Quote :
The rhizomes of the orris contains powerfull toxic substances with healing properties which act as expectorant and are therefor usefull for treating coughs

Iris versicolor (Blue flag, wilid iris) se wortels is giftig.
Quote :
Pharmaceutical companies obtain iridine from rhizome which is a strong laxative and also a diuretic. The fresh roots in particular contain sharp and bitter tasting toxic substances so the the herb should only be used under expert supervision
