PostSubject: Adding koi to pond for first time   Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:03 pm

Hi all

I'm hoping that I can get some feedback on the below ASAP.

I was taught that when adding new koi to an existing pond after the quarantine peroid on should do the following:
1) add Virkon S to the pond at a rate of 3g/1000l, exactly 1hour before releasing them to the pond
2) mix 3g of potassium permanganate in 30l of water and leave koi in this mixture for exactly 7min and not a minute longer.
3) then you release the koi into the pond with the other fish.

Can someone please let me know if there is another procedure or is this sufficient?

Hi Chris, my penny's worth

1. Although lots of keepers use Virkon S in a pond I would be reluctant to use it myself.
2. The PP dip timing sounds a bit long for my liking, I have been told that you are not gaining anything by keeping it longer than 3 min in a PP dip. I would remove the Koi the minute she starts to look uncomfortable or start to stress and not a second longer. I have over done this before and it took some time to get the Koi back to normal.

I know Pieter reccomend a very strong salt dip when transferring Koi to a new pond, but I have not done this before.
