I was waiting to see how the experts evaluate the body shape seeing I am of the opinion that your collection is generally speaking very skinny. What are you feeding and how many times per day? Could be that the photos are misleading!

well was so depressed after my last fish post that I went and sold 80% of my fish this morning and went and bough all of these today. So if any are skinny it's not from me. If anything I overfeed. I feed shogun and now and then I mix shogun, clay, honey, garlic into doughy balls which I feed once a week. Also feed bloodWorm and frozen shrimp once a week.

Ill take a pic in 2 weeks again 2 compare.

Did my fish in my other post look skinny?

Then your new Koi has something to look forward too, first take it slowly with the feeding in the beginning, give them time to adapt.

Building a Koi collection takes time, you will see as we all grow in the hobby we all aspire to better quality Koi, unfortunately they all come with a price tag.
For one person the ultimate is R2k the next R10k some purist R60k and for some this means R 400k. A very well known keeper said as long as the price and quality is relevant. At the end of the day it is the pleasure and enjoyment we get from our purchases that we are comfortable with.

Here is a Kohaku with a 4Mil yen price tag and even this Koi needs another year in a mud pond at this price.

Marius, we are now hijacking Cliff's post, the cost of the Kohaku is without commission and airfreight. Landing cost will be about R 400,000.00, how many shall I order for you. Shocked

Have another 2 Sanke's that I gave up on trying to catch, will be posting those pics tonight or tomorrow night.

THe metallic sanke and the one I still have to post was told could be very very nice fish.......may even be able to show them, just want to know if it was a sales pitch or do you find it has potential, will post the other sanke asap.

Must say I am loving this purachina.....the white is so beautiful on it. And love the big fins, think it is so lovely to look at.

Cliff,

I will be honest. I don’t like any of these fish!

Where did you purchase them?

I bought them from loolilocks. They're their Israeli imports. Byron spent some time with me there and felt these were the best in he range I was looking in. apparently a day before someone else nearly cleaned out all their stock, which was just after the fish came out of quarantine so I timed it badly.

I'm very happy with what I got for what I was willing to spend for the intended purpose!

This really gets me going. One buys from so called reputable dealers and pay a relative steepish price, the fish look good to you and the dealers convince you...

Examples:

Loolilocks- AAA Imported:
( I really liked the fish)

Sandton Aquatic- AAA Imported

Another one from Sandton Aquatic AAA- got sick a month later

I found the show at Cresta also bad- sold to me as a Kumonryo by Joshua Koi:

Initially

Our relative new guys struggle and they take us for a ride???

And driving to Collin or Odendaalsrus is a bit of a mission..

Well Cliff, I hope I didn't kill your post.

It frustrates me so much when you spend a few hundred or more, think you have a nice fish and then the experts say it is not good- I do not blame the experts, that's how we ask and learn, but the dealers???!

Any other opinions on this? Who are reputable that will really help you choosing a fish (I know and accept there is always a gamble- my one daughter turned into a swan!) and is not just in it for a few quick bucks?

If you're referring to the tall one then I say you're 100% correct Laughing

Well for the general look I am aiming for in my pond I think that the selection I have is what I am aiming for.

Do however still have 2 sankes, another doitsu, a grass carp, and a chagoi. One of these I'm very convinced Pieter will aprove of........need to at least get his approval on at least one of my damn fish.

If I don't then I'll be sending him the 3 ghosts of christmas past this coming weekend!!!!!

Yes, the tall one!

I posted something similar at the beginning of the year and then got rid of quite a number of fish. Most of the guys on the forum were relatively consistent. Have a look at the post.

My problem is with the dealers- all these fish were bought at koi farms, the Cresta show, Loolilocks, Koi Mecca, etc. My problem is that we buy, often with their advice, and a year later we let go of the so called good fish.

Can the guys recommend again?

PostSubject: Ugly koi   Thu Dec 10, 2009 3:14 pm

You guys are so lucky! My wife refuses to allow me to part with any of my koi...and I have some really ugly fish! One Bekko's name -named by her - is Kwasimodo. His head and body are not streamlined, and just behind the gill plate there is an angle to the left. He's about 50cm long. The other Hikarimujo has a bladder problem, so he's almost always pointing downwards at a 30 degree angle, but he allows her to hand feed him. He's about 70 cm.
Collin has suggested that I stick them in her bath and tell her that she could do with them what she wants, but they're not allowed in my pond! If I should take his advice I will only see my koi once a month when I will have visitation rights!
Most of my koi were 'gimme's' when a friend moved to a townhouse. At least I got some nice 'pond fish' with them, as I had to take the whole family.
So Albie and Cliff, I would really be 'pissed' if I had bought them! I got some really nice, small fish from Collin and Leanne...and now patiently wait for the ugly ones to disappear!

My golden rule "Keep the fish that your wife likes". Don't even think of getting rid of them!! But she would love the chagoi to go!

Hi all,

First of all, no matter what who says about you Koi, it remains your Koi! You are the one having joy looking at them, feeding them and care for them.
If someone asks me for my opinion regarding his Koi, remember it is only my humble opinion, I am not a Koi judge, and I am a Koi keeper like all of you. I have ugly Koi with sentimental value as well, but hell, they are mine!
I must agree that some dealers are not up too standard regarding Koi knowledge by their sale staff, and the staff will tell you any “cock ‘n bull” story to make a sale.
I have found that dealers where the owners are present most of the time and dealing with the customers direct are more reliable.
These dealers have a reputation to uphold and therefore they will not sell you a “pond-spawn” claiming that it is a potential “Show Champion”
Remember that a cheap Koi is only that, good Koi comes at a prize!
