My pond Empty
PostSubject: My pond   My pond EmptyThu Apr 08, 2010 8:50 pm

Hi All,
Before I get to my pond I would like to thank ALL concerned for the very interesting and informative posts. I have read most of them and enjoyed every minute of it, can't wait to see what is next and... very disappointed when there is no new posts.

My pond is approximately 15 months old and is 4200 x 3200 x 1700 which is approximately 23 000 liters although at a glance it looks like 10 or 12 000 liters as most of the pond is obstructed by a bridge that leads to my front door.

The pond has one bottom drain which flows into a settlement chamber 12 m away. The water is pumped from the settlement chamber through two, two bag sand filters, through 12m of 110mm pvc pipes filled with bio balls, through two 15 watt uv's back to the pond via two 50 mm pipes, one to a waterfall, the other to a venturi.

I have been very fortunate that I have not experienced any problems from the word go and have lost two fish to now, one got sucked into the bottom drain during cleaning and backwashing the other died due to a growth, similar to the Utsuri that Wayne posted awhile ago.

My water is clystal clear and I do weekly water changes and backwashes. In spite of this I have recently built new settlement chamber and bio filter of approximately 1800 liters which will feed my old settlement chamber. I have installed a five tier trickel tower and used a .25 kw speck pump to pump the water from new bio filter to the trickel tower which runs into the old settelment chamber. Unfortunately I could not do this any other way as the pond is at the enterance to my home. Now enough talking time for some pic's if I can do it right this time. Excuss the quality, most of them are taken with my Nokia... and I failed to say that I have 50 + koi Embarassed

Bobby, some nice rubelini palms will look good. The pond and the wall will handle the roots and stump as they only grow about 3 m high.

Hi Collin

Lovely setup and the fish also look very good.

Robelini palms do well in pots Bobby and as Collin says they are very nice.

Collin, As ek so na jou dam kyk en sien jy het ook nog 'n dwalende oog vir nuwe talent, dan dink ek die WCKC sal vir jou 5 + damme moet reserveer vir Willowbridge Mall. cheers

Hi Collin, thanks for posting.

The photos don't do your setup and your fish justice. I have seen your setup and much better photos.

Would also like to see your new DIY trickle filter. Did you find any major improvement in water clarity and water parameters since you have installed the new trickle towers?

Hi Paul,
Will post some better photos, these were taken with my Nokia so quality is not good. As for my trickel tower, after all the drama and the huge water changes I will have to give the filters some time to settle before I can do a fair comparison, but will post the photo of the filters and changes if any. The water looks great though, crystal clear.
