| I planned my first 2009 controlled (natural) spawning for Saturday and they did not disappoint me. One 82 cm Japanese bred Yamabuki female and I had to use three male Chogoru Purachina's to do the trick, as two of them battled to get the eggs out due to the size of the female. (Normally two males for a female) Males: One Doitsu, One Ginrin and one normal Wagoi. They should produce great Hariwake's considering the bloodlines, and the advantage of Ogons is that you do not have to cull as much as other varieties, and I do have the space now. Lets hope for the best. Herewith two videos of the action. _________________ Paul Viljoen E Mail: koi@absamail.co.za ; http://www.koionline.co.za

| Hi Paul
Very nice start! You sould not have put a Doitsu male in, it is going to give you problems during the culling. |

| Hi Collin
Why do you say so? Would not mind having a variety of Wagoi, Ginrin and Doitsu. _________________ Paul Viljoen E Mail: koi@absamail.co.za ; http://www.koionline.co.za

| Yip, you are going to get a variety - all on 1 fish.
Jokes aside, During first culling it is going to be very difficult to see the rogue scales that are neither doitsu nor wagoi. I would do fisrt culling at about 7cm if space allows, then you should be able to see rogue scales more clearly.
Good luck! |

| Most of the babies are now 6cm.
In view of the fact that the three males were purachina's and the female a Yamabuki, I expected quite a few pure whites in view of the fact that the male genes are dominant.
However, 90% are all yellow and only 10% starts to get white now(Hariwake)
Mainly ginrin Yamabuki's, but the quality looks very good. Will post photos soon.

| Wayne, I would say the opposite.
Always good to breed metallic with metallic. You apparently often improves the metallic sheen and that is what makes or breaks a metallic koi.
They are both Ogons, the one being white and the other yellow. Because of this, the majority of the fish are sellable.
With most other varieties, you have to cull the majority.
You can put a purachina with almost any variety.
Amongst new hobbyists, I found that the Platinum Ogons and Yamabuki Ogons are some of the most popular koi, and they are easy to breed and sell.
For the Go-sanke, I leave the breeding to the experts for now. _________________ Paul Viljoen E Mail: koi@absamail.co.za ; http://www.koionline.co.za

| Ok, i get it. Its a commercial strategy. You get both types from one spawning.
Are there no negative aspects in doing it this way? Wont some yamabukis develop white markings later in life and visa versa?
PS - When i restocked my pond i bought 1 x Yamabuki and 2 X Purachino. But i dont think the Purachinos will stay to long. A white fish is a plain, boring, white fish in my book. |

| While we are on the beeding subject. How often can one reuse the male for spawning. Lets say you have 2 females and 1 male...can he handle it the next day or how long must one wait for his reserves to build up? |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love the Purachina's. It is almost as if the enhances the colours of surrounding go-sanke.
This is one of the males I used. Not plain and boring to me.

| Sorry paul is that not a saragoi? I have two as i said, maybe ill keep the one to see what effect it has. Mine is very small 20cm so it does not really have any effect on any of the other koi at the momment. Ons weet in elk geval almal dat ek vol dinge is... My vrou het 'n ander woord vir die "dinge". |
