PostSubject: unexplained death   Tue Dec 23, 2008 1:20 pm

Hello, today one of my koi died.
My guru can't tell me why, so here are the criteria.
Health of eyes good,
fins good,
scales were not sticking up (no bloating) and had slime but for a few 'dry' patches along lower body.
She was carrying eggs and they have been spawning. (New fry are active)
It looked like her belly had exploded! her intestines were all protuding and flesh missing over ribs, bones exposed.
She was about 35cm long with a wound of about 10cm along the abdomen.
No evidence of bird or otter involvement.
The fish was unintersted in food and sitting away from all the others for about 2-3 days, sometimes in the water stream.
None of the other fish are showing signs of stress or disease and are eating well.
The pond temperature is fairly warm and is well airated. pH is ever so slightly alkaline. There is a light single algae and foam presence (UV light is on and working 24 hours). The pond has a reasonable amount of salt.
Any suggestions of what this could have been.
Thanks
Ellie

Firstly get a new Guru!

Secondly "It looked like her belly had exploded" Her belly did explode due to egg bound.

Thirdly it is not her that spawned.

And lastly all other koi should be fine just do 20% water change.

Thaks for your suggestion Collin.
I don't think it was egg bound as her body shape was fine, not bloated, nor bent spine.
