There is no animal or fish or bird in nature that will eat more than it needs (unlike humans or domestic animals). If they over-feed the one day then they will go for several days without food.

In natural water environments, there is also nothing that releases food for the fish a bit at a time. The food is always available and they eat as they need.

The only reason why koi keepers are always warned against high feeding rates is because your water can go bad as a result of poor filtration and has nothing to do with the fish. If you have enough filtration then you can feed as much as you want.

For these reasons, I have a policy that if there is no food floating on the surface of my pond then I must throw some in. I dont have a set number of times I feed per day, but rather I feed constantly every time there is no food. My wife, child and even the gardner has instructuions to feed when nothing is floating around. With this, I have amazing growth rates and I have NEVER in three years ever had a problem with over feeding.

May i ask what filter you use and what is your filter to pond capacity ratio?
