What is Tategoi

I saw most koi dealers said they are selling tategoi, but is this true? If all the dealers are selling tategoi, than all the koi keepers will have a pond full of tategoi in their pond? Do you think this is true?

The answer is NO! Basically all the koi that the dealer selling aren’t tategoi.

This is why I would like to type an article about this topic.

What is Tategoi:
Tategoi, is a term used by Japanese breeders to describe koi with future potential.

According to what I understand, tategoi will be the best +- 0.005% of all the fry hatched. In Japan all tategoi are not for sale, the breeder will keep them and raise them to enter the All Japan Show.

Therefore, all the koi we buying from a dealer are not true tategoi. Except you are prepared to pay a very high price to buy a small tategoi straight from the breeder, than you can get a true tategoi.

All the koi we keeping now are not true tategoi, in the breeder’s eye the koi we keeping now are just good quality koi.

NB! THE ABOVE IS JUST MY PRESONAL COMMENTS, If I SAID ANYTHING YOU DISLIKE PLEASE FROGIVE ME.

Tategoi is dfinately a term used and misused depending on the defination applied. Here ae a few definations I hear utilized most often.

Tategoi - Defination #1 = Koi not for sale by breeder at this time. By this defination this means any koi you buy from a breeder or dealer cannot be a tategoi because it was not kept by the breeder.

Tategoi - Defination #2 = koi felt by the breeder to have the potential to become much much more valuable in the future. (think at least 10 fold value increase in the future) So you could potentially buy this defination of Tategoi but will pay a price near what the breeder feels it will eventually be worth and at least 10X and more the average price for this breeders koi at this age. These are the koi that costs as much as a new luxury automobile.

Tategoi - Defination #3 = koi felt by the breeder to have some modest potential to develop into a some what more valuable koi in the future. In other words a koi that is still developing and improving but not thought by the breeder to be worth keeping to grow another year.

So when is a tategoi no longer a tategoi. Easy, when it stops improving. Sadly this can only be known in hindsight by mortal koi keepers.
