Hi guys,

I moved my koi from my pond to my father in law's last week.

Out of 9 I moved, only 1 remains.

My father in law has an incredible problem with any koi under 30cm being eaten I assume. I am not sure by what bird though.

I don't have any pictures. But I will take some tonight.

It is basically 4X5 and about 1-1.5m deep.

It is in front of the house and there is a roofcoverying most of it, it is about 2 stories above the pond though.

The pond also has a ...

I have a sick koi at the moment and need some advice. I found it in the skimmer about two weeks ago stuck head down in the basket. Not sure how long it was in there could have been anything up to 12 hours as I cleaned the basket in the morning. Fish seems unable to stay upright keeps swimming on its side and not really eating. I have put it in a separate container in the pond and are trying to hand feed but not really taking much in. Do you think it stands a chance of recovery. It is about ...

So I leave it be and carry on with other things, so about an hour later I walk past the pond, have a squiz and see eberything is ok, go around to the bank of the house and spend some time on the pool.
I have got the second sand filter that starts to leak due to a hole/crack in the seam.

I fixed the first hole easily by drilling a large hole on that spot, and installed a tank connector with a screw lid on the connector. Quite handy, because I sometimes do backwashes using this opening by unscrewing the lid.

However, the hole on the other one is on the bend close to the top lid, and this trick will not work.

I have tried fiber glass, but because it is a plastic sandfilter, it ...

Hi,

I was at petmasters in boksburg yesterday and saw some very nicely priced koi for sale, they had a nice range and I liked the look of the fish.

Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experiences with them? I know David said he was appaled at the tanks that house the goldfish etc, which I admit is appaling as they are quite small. On the koi side I did see 3 dead fish, 2 in seperate tanks on the big fish side and 1 in the fingerling side.

All the fish there look pretty healthy, ...

I have been asked by Karen Wentzel to place a value on one of her "humanoid" koi, a 60 cm Matsuba. No blemishes.

I would appreciate your inputs. Quite an extraordinary and unique koi.

The photo is not very good.

It rained so much in Cape Town and surrounds this weekend, Aggi and Mike Gregan lost all their koi and koi pond after the river came down at Klipheuwel. They are living on the banks of the river. Nobody can get in or out of Klipheuwel, just outside Durbanville.

If anybody see a few koi looking very lost coming down the river, please call them. Two of them has got names, Gin and Tonic.

Waiting for the pics.

Hi everyone

I have been searching over the net to find the desired mud pond size for a breeding facility.

I am hoping someone can assist me with regards to finding out the ideal size for a Koi Breeding Mud Pond.

My intention is to build approx 20 fry breeding mud ponds as well as larger growing ponds in Cape Town. We will be using Japanese stock to breed with. Our aim is to grow these fish as fast as possible to optimum size.

Any information wit regards to this will be welcome. ...

I often get the question from hobbyists, why do their koi lose it’s hi(red)?

Some people say that it is all about the quality of the bloodline, genetics and breeder, some people say it is water conditions (sharp fluctuations in ph, water too hard, too soft, high Ammonia or Nitrites etc) and some people say it can be caused by shock, fluctuations in temperature or stress in general.
Hi All

Here is a nice debating point.

A client’s koi pond was contaminated with oil. Now the question is how would you decontaminate the koi and koi pond? The pond is about 1000L and I estimated that there is about 200ml of oil on the service of the pond.

I know you penguin lovers will know the answer to this easy question.

Remember the idea is to safe the koi.

Hi everyone,

I saw a lot of local fish farm do breed metallic koi, i also saw some local breeder breed orange and yellow kujaku.

My question is, how come i never saw any local breeder who breed red kujaku?

Is it because the SA koi hobbyist prefer ornange and yellow kujaku rather than red kujaku?

But for myself, i prefer red kujaku more than orange kujaku.

I would love to hear your comments.

Thanks.

Pond volume is 5000 litres and approx 20 koi of which the majority are 30cm. We had a power failure due to cable theft which lasted 48 hours. I squirted water into the pond with the hosepipe to try and oxygenate the water which to some degree worked. After 24 hours at day break two koi had jumped out the pond during the night and died and the remaining fish were really gasping for air. I followed the same procedure with the hosepipe. When the power was restored things were starting to return ...

My farm is slowly but surely taking shape, and I will have an open day in due course.

Water, electicity, security, liners, bird netting, etc etc etc. The costs are killing me. Example, R 27 600.00 just to extend a power connection with 300 meters.

Anyway, it is a pleasure and very exciting.

Herewith my temporary (emergency) quarantine facilities to accommodate more than a thousand new koi that arrived from Japan last week, all doing exceptionaly well, of which 500 will be up for ...

Hi All

This will be my first time I am buying proper Koi and they should arrive in the next week or so. What do I do once they arrive at home? I know you have to float the bags on the water to adjust temperature and not releasing the water in the bag to the pond when you release the fish. Some will be between 40 and 60cm long. I the past I bought my fish near my home, so transport time was short and water conditions / temperature conditions were roughly the same.

Is there something ...

Hi,

I bought 4 fish from King Koi last Sunday. Two Tancho's, a Utsuri (black and white) and a Sanke (Red, black, white).

All the fish are doing well except the Sanke, which I found dead last week Monday morning floating at the top of the pond.

I have no idea why this happened, at about 9pm on Sunday night they were all fine and eating.

Could there have been something wrong with this Sanke? From what I could see when I examined it, it looked in perfect condition.

It ...
