Had this idea over the weekend...

How feasible is it to do an update here on the forum, would need some IT expert to help, so we can have a section for pond and fish.

When you register you give pond details, and filter set-up etc in pre set fields, also we have section for fish detail you can have per pond, with size classification etc.

Think the "fish register" could help every owner too, could track fish on there. Could even do it with pictures....any thoughts?

I am now thoroughly confused!!!

How many times in one season can a given koi spawn?

My Chagoi, spawned at the end of September. I currently have two porta pool thingies full of fry.

Heres the thing, she is busy going at it again!!!!

I have created a new +- 100 000 liter pond (15 x 7) (in progress), to accommodate newly hatched fry.

I need to make an urgent decision.

Option 1

Only an air compressor with various air stones like most people do it.

Option 2

Two submersible pumps, each pulling from 15 meter x 40 mm irrigation pipes lying on the bottom, full of holes, covered with stockings to prevent the fry from being sucked in, and returning via bakki showers.

I will appreciate your inputs ...

I planned my first 2009 controlled (natural) spawning for Saturday and they did not disappoint me.

One 82 cm Japanese bred Yamabuki female and I had to use three male Chogoru Purachina's to do the trick, as two of them battled to get the eggs out due to the size of the female. (Normally two males for a female)

Males: One Doitsu, One Ginrin and one normal Wagoi.

They should produce great Hariwake's considering the bloodlines, and the advantage of Ogons is that you do not have to ...

The breeding season has just started as can be seen from Jaco's latest offsprings.

I am going to keep it simple this year by trying to breed only with Ogons (Chogoru purachinas and Yamabubi's - male and female of each), trying to produce Purachina, Yamabuki and Hariwake and will post development.

We are always behind down here in the Cape, and I am waiting until it is a bit warmer.

It is extremely exciting to see the harvest of thousands of small koi after a successful breeding.

I would like to start breeding Kohaku only from hopefully 2010 so what I would like to know is where can I get a breeding pair locally and what quality would be suggested (more towards bloodlines) if applicable to locally available koi.

My main Goal is not to generate income but to try and breed a champion over the years.

So I will need a breeding pair to start with and from those subsequant spawnings try and improve on quality.

So I would purely be a hobbiest constantly trying ...

Koi breeding

Whether you are a Koi-breeder, a hobbyist trying to breed or a hobbyist whose Koi just breed by themselves, there are a few important factors to keep in mind during the spawning season.

In South Africa, spawning generally occurs from mid-spring to late summer – September to November – in the early morning hours when the water is a warm +20 ºC. The Japanese say the best spawning time is during the full moon phase.

Is it a boy or a girl?
