After building my small QT pond of nearly 8000L I added water and let it run for a few days, but emptied it again. Louise is doing the maintenance on both ponds and part of the deal building the second pond was that I had to redo the bathroom for her. The main reason for empting the pond was that a lot of dust collected in the pond due to the traffic from the workers. I did not want to fill up the pond again till they were finished.

I have been living in Cape Town for the past 4 years and have

koi). So I have built a pond in my garden and am struggling to

maintain it properly due to lack of knowledge. I have about 18 carp in

Man what a day. We eventually removed the Vase and the rusted base 1. [img]

The base is over 2 meters long and had tons of rust, of which some unfortunately was dissolved in the water. The plan was to remove 50% of the water as per the recommendations in the previous topic.

Upon removing the base we noticed that part of the floor which was covered by the base now was bare in that it was not covered by and waterproofing. 2 [/img]

I have recently inherited a koi pond with a new house purchase. I have subsequently fallen head over heels for the hobby. My pond is approximatley 12.500 litres. In the centre of the pond is a decorative vase with water sprayer. The base which goes to the bottom of the pond is a metal and is also attached to two of the walls of the pond. The metal is covered by what looks like rust. I am sure that this is poisonous, but not sure what the consequences are. Photo below

So to summarise

Hi, Here is an article I wrote some years ago that may be of interest. I have had a lot of enquires lately about using clay in ponds.

Montmorillonite

The addition of montmorillonite clays to fish ponds have proven benefits. Many koi keepers used these clays with great success. Montmorillonite clays are commercially available under various brand names depending on the country of origin.

Montmorillonite clays, vary in chemical composition and purity, enhance water quality, replenish ...

Water conditions are the most important aspect of Koi keeping and should be mastered before introducing expensive Koi or too many Koi.

If your water conditions are not good, your Koi will not grow as fast, they will get sick regularly or they will die.

In short, the waste from the fish creates Ammonia which is deadly to the fish.

However, nature provided a nitrification cycle to solve this problem. Bacteria called Nitrosomonas grow in your Bio filter and pond and breaks down the ammonia ...
