I have decided that this summer my koi will get silkworm pupae. They say it is the best nutrition available for koi, and most of the very expensive koi foods have it as an ingredient.

Naturally, high in protein, calcium, and additional nutrients that promote vibrant luster and growth.

However, it is very expensive and most of it available in South Africa is old.

So we have decided to buy 12 Mulberry trees instead, and grow the worms ourselves. We have got 10 000 eggs, and they ...

Hi All, i recently bought myself a feeder and was wondering what the best way would be to use it. Before i had the feeder my koi got there food twice a day. But now with the feeder i have more options on when to feed.

I calculated the amount of food that I'm suppose to give my kois at 1.5% of body weight and according to my calculations i need to feed 441 grams of food a day at 2% it works out to 588g a day but i decided to go with the 1.5% option for now.

I found that the small Koi often gets much less and the large Koi just gulps it away in ponds where there are a variety of sizes.

Lately I am only feeding small pellets due to the following:

It is cheaper because you buy bulk of one size.

It is more convenient because you use only one container.

You only open one packet at a time and the food stay fresh.

It give all the sizes a fair ...

There is no animal or fish or bird in nature that will eat more than it needs (unlike humans or domestic animals). If they over-feed the one day then they will go for several days without food.

In natural water environments, there is also nothing that releases food for the fish a bit at a time. The food is always available and they eat as they need.

The only reason why koi keepers are always warned against high feeding rates is because your water can go bad as a result of poor filtration ...

Rather feed three times a day than once or twice in summer. Koi do not have stomachs and will grow faster if you feed more regularly.

Feed only once a day during winter and early spring and stop feeding if the water temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius.

Do not feed more than what they can eat in 5 minutes. If there is still food on the surface after 5 minutes, take it away ...
