Hi,

I am busy re-writing the Health Manual for SAKKS. We wrote the original one back in 1992.

I am doing a little research on the different sections - at the moment its Quarantining koi

I asked the question should you quarantine koi before you put them into the pond in a previous post on this forum. All replies said yes you should. BUT read on ....... there are two sections to this post -

Section 1

Your input please -

WHAT are you quarantine facilities? i.e how big, filtration?, ...

Is it Worth Quarantining Koi?

Hi,

I ask this question in all honesty and for very good reason.

I have been collecting koi for 36 years. I have witnessed many different interpretations of quarantining koi. I have my own method of quarantining. I was discussing quarantining koi the other day with a guy who visits ponds, treats sick fish and assists koi keepers every day. He has around 800 people on his books.

Here is a hypothetical situation - if a koi dealer sells 100 koi on a weekend to 50 customers (this is ...

We sterilized our Quarantine tanks two week before arrival and got the filtration going with heat and bio boost.

We added 2.5 kg of salt/1000 liters, another 2.5 kg to be added a day after introduction of the fish.

On arrival, we opened the boxes in very dim light because the fish was in darkness for 42 hours;

Thereafter we floated the bags for 10 minutes to enable the bags to adjust to the temperature and soft light. We did not float them for a longer period, because we ensured that the ...

QUARANTINING PLANTS

Not only can new fish carry bacteria and parasites on them, but so can new water plants you introduce to your pond. We therefore encourage you to always quarantine your new water plants. By using potassium permanganate you can ensure that most parasites/nasty bacteria will be killed.

Dip your new plants into a bucket with p/p and leave for at least 4hrs in the water before adding them to your pond.

Do not quarantine the plants in water with a high salt content. (No more ...

DO WE OR DON’T WE QUARANTINE....?

This has always been a controversial topic among Koi keepers as to how serious quarantining is.

Here are some DO’S and DONT’S , you make up your own mind....!

1) Do have a quarantine facility ready for your new arrivals, the bigger the better.

2) Do regular water changes.

3) Do test for ammonia and nitrites regularly.

4) Do take scrapes if possible to ensure proper treatments for parasites.

5) Do have appropriate aeration

6) Do monitor your new ...
