What is Tategoi

I saw most koi dealers said they are selling tategoi, but is this true? If all the dealers are selling tategoi, than all the koi keepers will have a pond full of tategoi in their pond? Do you think this is true?

The answer is NO! Basically all the koi that the dealer selling aren’t tategoi.

This is why I would like to type an article about this topic.

What is Tategoi:

Tategoi, is a term used by Japanese breeders to describe koi with future potential.

Extract from the Star Newspaper, Toddlers, Koi and Tooth Fairy all suspects as cops chew over toothy riddle

January 16, 2007 Edition 1

Alex Eliseev

JOHANNESBURG: It's the riddle of 11 tiny teeth - and police are investigating just how they landed up in the swimming pool filter of a home.

Last week a man walked into the Sandton Police Station with a bag containing what appears to be 11 little white teeth, a police source said yesterday.

In his statement the resident ...

Hallo

To buy Big koi or Small koi?

I often heard people saying that buying small koi of 10 to 15cm is not wise, because the pattern and colour of koi at this size can change easily as they grow. And they say you can’t tell much detail on a small koi.

Therefore, most hobbyists will pay few thousand rand to buy a bigger koi (20 to 40cm) which you can tell more detail of the koi.

But, one koi breeder in Japan told me that: “If you want to learn and become an expert on koi, raising small ...

The most fascinating thing about the koi

is that if you keep it in a small fish bowl

it will only grow to be two or three inches long.

Place the koi in a larger tank or small pond

and it will reach six to ten inches.

Put it in a large pond and it may get as long as a foot and a half.

However, when place in a huge lake where it can really stretch out,

it has the potential to reach sizes up to three feet.

In 1921, Sawata Aoki heard the story of a special carp with streaks of gold on its dorsal fin, which had been caught in the river near Hirose village about 30 kilometers away. Sawata felt compelled to walk to the area and see this carp. It was a black magoi with a shine at the base of its dorsal fin. He bought it for a high price and took it home.

After he allowed it to grow large he bred it, keeping only the very few babies that had any golden shine. Over the next 25 years he produced ...
