Hi there,

I have recently converted a 17m (length) x 1.1m (depth) x 2m (width) swimming pool into a Koi pond at the Protea Hotel Fire&Ice!

Our pool is a rim flow pool and is fibre glassed black.

The conversion was done by Gavin from Koi Garden.

The length of the pool is a glass wall hence all guests who dine in our restaurant look straigth into our pond.

1) I would like to add a pump that blows bubbles from the ground up... is this a good or bad idea? do you know anyone ...

We visited Golden Dragon Koi Farm in Modderfontein in an old sewerage facility yesterday (not to be confused with Dragon Koi in Benoni)- Pavlo is a nice guy and I must admit that I couldn't resist buying some small ones. I especially liked this susui, but still very small. He also breeds in some of those circular dams.

He is very close to my home, if I need a home visit, but if there are concerns, pm me.

As mentioned before, I just had a bad experience January, got someone out from LL ...

I bought this fish approximately 2 months ago from Loolilocks, as a guinea pig to put in the pond. Price was more than R100, classified as AAA. I liked it so much, that I put it in the Portapool and put another one in- that died.

I still struggle with the classification, but I think it could be a doitsu ?kujaku.

Your opinion and should I have used it as a guinea pig?

As some of you might remember, I got rid of some poor quality fish in January (posted pics of my fish). I obtained some small ones in Feb this year, not for showing, but just some good quality ones. I had an opportunity to take photos when I took them out, as we are rebuilding our pond.

When I obtained the little ones, I new it was a gamble. This is how they have developed:

Went to visit a friend today who has a large pond with a bad leak. Unfortunately(not for us:D) he is selling some of fish. No space for holding tank. We commented on liking these and he gave them to us! No charge:)

Please excuse the horrid photo but they were pretty stressed out when we got home. Long drive. A ochiba and two sanke about 20 cm. If you have a comment about the fish please state why they might be good or bad:)

Since this board has been so busy this last few days....

I bought this showa at the end of August at our show for the grow and show competition. No idea how old it was. Paid R950 for it. Breeder is Sekiguchi.

It was 14cm when bought. By mid January it was 37cm. By April it was touching 50cm.

It's a hi showa but it appears to have enough shiro to give it some nice balance and there is a slim possibility that it might even become a two step. The hi is even and very deep and strong. ...

What do you think of this sanke. She will be 3 years old in June. 74cm. Sakai fish farm. Parent is Shining Rose. This pic was taken just after she arrived in the beginning of Feb. She was a little slim then. She has been on a special diet since I got her and she has bulked up very nicely. The sumi is yet to complete.

Are these 2 fish of good or average quality and will they develop more?

Got hold of them at the Bloem Koi show. About 30cm long

By the way the 2 small ones in the bottom picture are my girlfriend’s son’s fish. He convinced the x owner to add them to the basket since he wants to ‘show’ fish himself.

On 1 December 2008 i spawned my 66cm Torazo female kohaku with 1 Torazo male and 1 Dainichi male.

The Torazo female was purchased from Cape Koi Aquarium and aswell as the Torazo male. The dainichi kohaku was purchased from Platinum koi.

This was my first atttempt to spawn and i think everything went off very well. The majority of the spawning turned out to full red with a few exceptions, i think that is because the parent koi was mostly full pattern. there are some Tancho's ...

The one on the right (25cm) - is it a Kinrin Matsuba. Trying the classification for the first time.

Quality - well shaped but the scales at the bottom are not clear and therefore of lower quality.

The one on the left, just look s (20cm) just plain dirty and scales are like the other 1 . Have no idea what it is though.

Am i on the right track

These are pics of our fish in the small holding pond, we have built a larger 8000L pond next to it. We are going to use the smaller pond for our smaller fish, spawn and plants.

Please note the pics are not the best quality, I am a newbie when it comes to photographing fish. Will invest in a polarizing filter shortly:)

Posted two pics and a link to a photo album. positive and constructive criticism is welcome:)

The one on the right hand side is a Sanke X Showa F1

The one on the left hand side is a (Sanke X Showa F1) x (Sanke)

Although both are not high quality koi, but i hope you can see the different of the sumi.

"Sanke X Showa F1" has bigger sumi pattern, this koi is actually a by-product when a breeder trying to use showa's sumi to improve a sanke's sumi. I don't know why, i find this kind of koi's hi fade very easily.

Hello Everyone

I'm a total Noob as far as Koi are concerned. I breed Parrots, and have been interested in Koi ever since I dived in Wondergat(1991) and found 2 beautiful Specimens swiming alongside us.

Any way I recently (10 months ago) converted my Rock Swiming Pool (13000 litre) into a Koi Pond, (much to the disgust of my kids). Originally I just added a single 15watt UV Light to the system and filled the pond with a LOT of "cullings" to be sure that the pond would one day ...

I inherited a green pond with gold fish next to my stoep and gradually got the water as clear as can be over 6 years. It contains about 8000 litre.

Over the years I have bought some fish that often turned out not so good looking. My only big fish is a big yellow ogon that I bought last year for R300, but its head shape is a bit akward.

So I need comments on the bad, the ugly and the worst, because I gradually want to buy good quality (Having said that, I lot of these have been bought ...
