These artificial water bodies usually present huge challenges because of the imbalances that happen due to human interventions. What also make them hard to manage properly is the fact that waste water lands in the systems with the associated contamination.
The CARP was dumped by humans that did not think but the sad part is that it will happen again and again. The next thing is that some barbel lands in that system and then the water quality will suffer again.
What is needed is a voracious unforgiving predator like BASS ... and I know bass is a swear word in the Cape but a big bass population will prevent carp form getting a foothold.
The kurpers is a good thing because they provide food for the bass plus they do clean up well for certain algae and insects.
Bass is for the underwater intruders and birds for frogs.
I do not have any idea of how this waterbody is structured but the yankees make use of fairly large sedimentation ponds through which the treated sewage water runs before it gets into the actual water systems. The ponds are densly stocked with hyacinths. The plants not only scrub vast quantities of the nitrates off but they also have the ability to take heavy metals out of water.
Obviously managing the sediment ponds is an issue but it is easier than managing the algae blooms in the actual water body.
This poisening of the fish is short sighted and a short term solution of a complex longterm problem. They want clean blue water in a country that does not have the natural systems in place to produce it so now they want to make it happen but they only want to interfere partially.
