PostSubject: Easiest way to get crystal clear water   Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:23 am

I installed a new speck pump\sand filter\15L ultrazap bio booster with 15w UV, now I put 3 bags of course 5m koi sand and 1 bag zeolite on the top, ran pump thru filter till water was clear, altho it wasn't 100% clear, then ran this into the pond and the pond was murky. Now the pond is still kinda murky 5 days later, I just want to know the easiest way to clear this out. Water almost seems abit dirty brown now and it's frustrating me.

I got a .75 speck pump instead of a .45 which I am running on a 3 bag sand filter.

Anyway to get this cleaner\clearer......water looks dirty, just not enjoying it at the moment.

Any advice???

Hi cliff
Did you back wash the sand fillter before filltering the pond.
5mm sand sounds to big for me.
I use normal pool sand and it works fine. on my 5000L pond.

Yes, I did a backwash of about 3000 litres.........I bought koi sand from global pools, think it's 3-5mm sand.

obviously this wont get all the dust out as when I started feeding the water back into the pond there mas a slight milkiness that still fed back into the pond, however that milkiness has since dissappeared, just if I look at the water now, it's pretty clean at the top, just cannot see the bottom all that lekker and when I see the fish at the bottom they seem dirty compared to at the top.

Think I may have a bit of dirt at the bottom as I had a submersible in the pond while I was sorting out the filtration system.

I wish one got the ash stuff you get for settling dirt in a pool for a pond....altho it would be useless with all the fish moving around.

Just I have this lekker filtration system setup now, so really wish my water was crystal clear

Cliff,

The water should become clear after a few backwash sessions. Start with a backwash daily.
If you got a swimming pool brush, try to sweep the debris toward the bottom drain to “clean” the pond floor.
The zeolite might have caused the milky water. The zeolite and sand together in the sand filter are another question; I wonder how it will react with the back washing of the filter and if you will waste too much zeolite.
Maybe Chris Neaves could comment on this.
